The Battle of the Divine Nine: 2021 Greek Show

Members of the Alpha Tau Chapter for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc show high energy during their Bayou Classic Step Show routine on Friday, November 25.

The Bayou Classic weekend is one of the biggest, most exciting weekends for the HBCU culture. The weekend is full of events including orgs from both schools and many more with the prestigious Divine Nine kicking the weekend off with the 48th annual Greek Show.

The Divine Nine is a collaborative umbrella council composed of historically African American sororities and fraternities, with each organization involved being rich in history and legacy in their own regard. However, like all families, there is always room for a little friendly competition.

On Friday, November 26, 2021 just before the battle of the bands, the prestigious and most distinguished Divine Nine organizations from both Southern and Grambling competed in the step show.

Each organization was allowed a certain amount on stage. They were to put on a themed performance full of costumes, makeup, stepping, strolling, and chanting. The competition in a way sets the tone for the rest of the evening.

Everyone waited to see what else was in store for this grand weekend as junior Khristopher Harmon said, “As a student at Southern University, the Bayou Classic is always a great experience for me. This year was my third time attending the event. My favorite part is the Greek show watching all the sororities and fraternities stepping.”

After two years of being away from New Orleans, the stands were packed to the max. The crowd was hype from start to finish while witnessing the show.

Sophomore Ataja Williams attended her first Bayou Classic and said, “I knew it was going to be packed, but I did not expect this type of turn out. There were so many people. The energy of the crowd was like no other. It really didn’t matter who won, I just love seeing black people come together for friendly competition and fun with no problems. I definitely will be back next year!”

Bringing home the win was the Southern University Alpha Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and also Alpha Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Both Chapters were awarded $3,000.

For many it did not come as a shock that these two step teams came out victorious. Christopher George, a junior said, “After attending the Greek Show, there was no doubt in my mind who the winner would be for this Greek show. Either way it went I knew the show would be fire. I mean every team looked great.”

Each team took time to prepare routines for the show. There was even an appearance by the Southern University stomp and shake team, Code Blue. The evening was full of excitement and cheer from both schools. Win, lose, or draw, everyone walked away with a smile on their face ready for the next events to follow. Congratulations are in order to both the young men of Alpha Sig and the young ladies of Alpha Tau for Southern University.
