In the year 2021, female empowerment has been an essential movement in addressing the unbalanced paradigm of gender differences in our country. At a certain point though, some acts of empowerment seem more like grabs for attention than a demonstration of values or ideals.

In the case of Jada Pinkett Smith, in my honest opinion, she comes off as someone who is a representation of the positive potential that empowerment can become for Black women in the United States. And yet, she is also indisputably a woman who has displayed toxicity and selfishness towards her significant other for an extended period of time.

This has been done through her making decisions with only herself in mind and not respecting how other people, namely her significant other, could possibly react to it.

In one of the pandemic’s quarantine episodes of the Red Table Talk, there was an episode where it was established that Will and Jada were going through some tough times in their relationship. This was on the heels of a widely reported affair that Jada Pinkett was having with R&B singer August Alsina. It got to a point where Will Smith said on air that he felt as if things could have been over between them, to which Jada replied, “Yeah, no, we were over.”

In my opinion, that right there shows that she does not value the relationship that she and Will had over the past three decades. It's sickening to know that one of the women that fans have valued for so long for her talent was actually someone that truly does not care for a true life long relationship. Even if they were going through tough times, they should have talked about it and made a final decision on it between themselves in the walls of their home, not on a self-made, self-gratifying television talk show.

This all reached a head however, when in recent months during an episode of the Red Table Talk, she alluded to specifics concerning the sex life that she shares with Will Smith, noting how she felt that it’s hard maintaining energy with someone that she’s been together with for so long.

“If you love me, you should be able to read my mind with what I want,” is what Pinkett-Smith said in the clip. Firstly, no man is going to read a woman’s mind trying to figure out what she wants. Secondly, the idea and entire point of a relationship, no matter how long it has been, is to be able to communicate. If maintaining a good sex life was difficult she should have told him, not made a spectacle for headlines to run with.

At the end of the day, the couple has been married for longer than I’ve been alive, so maybe they’re privy to certain perspectives that I couldn’t imagine. But from my point of view, that’s not something that you do when you’re in love with someone. So if the love isn’t there, maybe it’s time for losses to be cut and papers to be signed, because it just doesn’t seem to be getting any better between the two stars.
