Southern University of-ficials remain upset at how law enforcement officials handled the arrest of a high-ranking Student Government Association official Thursday.
SGA Chief Justice Christopher Richardson, a senior political science major from Thibodaux, was arrested on charges of aggravated rape and oral sexual battery of a 15-year-old female.
“What upsets me is that they paraded him around the union. As the dean of students, it’s my job to protect everyone on this campus,” said Robert Bennett, dean of students. “They should have contacted me and I would have talked to Christopher myself. He’s a good kid. I’ve known him since he was in school. All they had to do was speak to me and I would have brought him in.”
According to an initial Baton Rouge Police Department report obtained by the DIGEST and other media reports, the incident allegedly involving the 23-year-old Richardson took place Aug. 23 and was reported the next day, culminating with the alleged victim sustaining minor injury and visiting a local hospital. The Juvenile Sex Crimes Division was also notified.
His bail was set at $75,000 at the time of the arrest, but Richardson’s name did not show up on the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison’s Internet listing of inmates.
According to Bennett, SUPD Chief Michael Morris—accompanied by two off-campus police and two U.S. Marshals—entered the second floor of the Smith-Brown Memorial Union Thursday looking for Richardson, who was then handcuffed and escorted out of the union.
Although they were present at the arrest, Morris said they were only assisting the U.S. Marshals.
“We don’t respect criminals. The respect belongs to the 15-year-old girl,” Morris said. “As far as I’m concerned, he’s a felon. You might be innocent until proven guilty, but when a judge has signed the warrant for probable cause, then it’s serious.
“Should he have been treated differently because he was in SGA? I think not. We didn’t beat him or curse at him. His Miranda Rights were read and he was handcuffed for his safety and ours.”
When asked how he felt about criticism on the way the arrest was handled, Chief Morris said, “When ‘they’ get to be chief of SUPD, they can run the department how ever they see fit.”
Morris also added that Richardson’s arrest would not have taken place in the SGA office, but the previous three places they searched he was not there. Almost a month had passed from the time of the incident until the arrest.
“This was our last resort,” he said. “Honestly, it broke my heart to do that. But that’s the law of the land and we have to respect that.”
Bennett believes BRPD overreacted in their manner of arresting Richardson.
Bennett said, due to Hur-ricanes Gustav and Ike, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office was unable to locate Richardson, who in turn contacted the U.S. Marshals to trace Richardson’s whereabouts.
According to state law, a person convicted of aggravated rape could face a life sentence without the chance of parole, probation or a suspended sentence while oral sexual battery could garner 10 years if the victim is under the age of 15 or three years younger than the offender. The police report shows Richardson is at least eight years older than the alleged victim.
“This is a serious charge. Regardless of if he’s guilty or not, he’s in the court system. I always try to tell the students on campus, be careful about going into girl and boy’s room. You may have not done anything wrong, but if someone says you did and you were there, then that means you might have.”
SGA President Jamal Taylor agrees with Bennett. “I think the situation with SUPD was handled disrespectfully. They acted as if he were a hardened criminal.”
As of yesterday, Richardson had been released and has relinquished his position as SGA Chief Justice.
“This is not an admission of guilt,” said Bennett, “but the implications are very serious. One should not have that hanging over his head.”
It is now up to Taylor to appoint a new Chief Justice, whom the Senate will confirm. The President said within the coming weeks he’ll make his recommendation to the Senate and hopes that everyone can move on.
Julie Wessinger, interim vice-chancellor of student affairs, said the University would take no action until Richardson’s case has been tried.
“He’s still a student at this university,” she said. “He has all the rights and privileges everyone else has.”

I was accused of rape at Texas Southern......... Due to the action of TSUPD they investigated it to the "T" and if it was not for that I will be in jail. They were able to get the girl to come out and say that I did not rape her. Just because he was accused doesnt mean he is guilty. Let justice be done!

Well, growing up I witnessed a man be wrongly accused of messing with a 15 year old girl who happened to be his neighbor, this man died in jail and this girl went on with her life, and thought the whole situation was hilarious. Not saying that Richardson is wrong or right, but he has to be proven guilty and women for years have taking advantage of how society takes into consideration rape. We don't want to interrogate her in fear that she is traumatized, don't get me wrong some women actually go through traumatizing situations such as rape and some women just lie about the entire situation to be spitful. We do NOT know what this situation is. We do not even know if Richardson had contact with the female, he might not had done anything to her, he could have just known her from his home town and she decided to throw some charges on him. When Richardson has his day in court then he can attest to what has happened. As for SUBR chief of police, ignorance runs rampid throughout his mind! All people are innocent until proven guilty with the CORRECT evidence and he proclaims to be a man that knows the law? Lies and deciet! I'm proud of Bennett because finally someone cares for SU students besides fellow students, at least this man took the time to learn Richardson, even if he is meeting his spokes person, how many students can say that an administrator or professor took the time to learn them without the student having to go the extra mile just to become acknowledged?

I do not care how "fast", and "hot" young girls are these days...fellows keep your nasty dirty hands off! What goes around comes around. Your own daughters will grow up in this world filled with many that hold those very opinions. You will not be happy to know that some dirty old man is......all of that with your child.

If he's such a good kid, as the dean said, why is he affiliating himself with a 15 year old in the first place?
Also, it doesn't matter if officers talked to the dean or not. They were doing their job to arrest him if he has
done the crime. That's one of the issues with Baton Rouge now. It's all about who you know to get people
out of trouble, and I think that this is why the "The Dean" is so upset. Just because you're smart in school
doesn;t allow you to break the law. The officers have done a very good job!

If this young man did indeed commit these acts, bye bye! Either way, due process is always in order. What I think that is completely out of order is SU's Chief Morris' overzealous and grossly premature insinuation that this young man is a criminal. I expect all sworn in law enforcement professionals to act at all times as agents of the law and it's due process. Mr. Morris' statements are baseless until the defendant is proven guilty. Chief Morris, I strongly encourage you to re-evaluate your position, authority, and leadership. Meanwhile, I'll be praying for this teenage girl and a healthy recovery, as well as the defendant.

I am surprised at the University's position on this matter. Yes the young man has to have his day in court, but the institution(students/staff/administration) should be more sensitive to both parties . The law has a duty to perform and no matter when and where that has to happen, it has to happen. Mr. Bennett is wrong in his ideology, Southern is not some sovereign nation where he is the enforcer of justice. Southern is a state entity, that is owned by state tax payers, subject to Louisiana laws. The University should not persecute law enforcement for doing their job, in fact, they should praise them for performing duties that tax payers are subsidizing. What type of Chancellor allows such disrespect for law enforcement to go un-checked. Yes this happens on other campuses, and I have witnessed outside police agencies follow the same protocol. Stop using the race card, blacks have got to do better. Even if sex was not forced upon the young lady it still fits the statutory rape criteria. How ironic....The Chief of the student judiciary branch is responsible for such an irresponsible illegal act.

ok... E3... let me enlighten you. Whether u believe it or not...our "lttle girls" are not so little. Girls these days are having sex at 9,10,11years old and up. So it's not all about the males. These little hot girls look like they are over 18 these days and if u ask them how old they are they will lie. they have fake id's and everything else that would make u think that they are older. Did she do a rape exam, was his semen found on her? What evidence are they using? And if he was a student on SU campus it would not be hard to find him. It's not like SU is this big broad campus or anything like that. Yes, i went to SU and love my people but please.... What they did was not necessary. As far as for the SUPD..... that's a joke! They are some of the most arrogant, ignorant, people around. So they probably thought they were the ____ when the US Marshalls showed up strutting like some peacocks. Please.... R did I step on some toes and make "em say ouch!!!!

i think that it doesnt matter who the student is or where they come from because you hear about this kind of stuff all the time on the news. richardson may not be guilty of this charge because REMEMBER she is only 15 and now a days girls are 13 having sex so she not innocent herself. The way they arrested him was way out of line because any other college would have had the campus police bring in the suspect. I feel that when richardson is able to give his side of the story then thats when people can start judging him....

Whether it was forced or not I think we should be able to tell a 15 year old when we see one. Also either way it goes you will still serve time due to the fact that he had sex with an underaged girl. So either way he doesn't win, if the girl lied about the rape or not, it was still sex with a minor. And just from personally knowing Chris Richardson, he is not all that we think he is, he has done his dirt and he is a bit of a pervert when it comes to women.

First of all, Chief Morris you are an official hole. Just because this man was arrested does not make him a felon. A felon is someone who has been CONVICTED of a serious crime. He is an alleged perpetrator. SU employees and administrators leave work at five (for the most part) and the students are left to be harassed and preyed upon by officers who take their lead from this sense-less thug with a badge. Had you beat him or cursed him, you or the U.S. Marshalls or BRPD could have been sued for police brutality. But because you didn’t physically harm Richardson, I wouldn’t be naïve to think that the SUPD has been free of brutality or harassment.
Morris you should clean out your own closets, or rather department before you start calling students that cannot defend themselves felons. Whatever happened to the Officers Anderson and Mckneely. The two that were falsifying time sheets. Were they turned over by you Chief Morris, to the BRPD? If they are still on the payroll, that shows that you only regard upholding the law when it benefits you. The Digest should follow up on that.
I’m not going to condone acts against children or minors and given the benefit of the doubt, I think the young man would have been responsible enough to turn himself in to face the consequences his acts. Be mindful readers It’s a bad situation for both involved. Even if the child wasn’t raped, you have to remember, she’s a child and will be traumatized with this for the rest of her life. Let us not be so quick to side with either. Let the justice system run its course.
To Dean Bennett, you are right. Continue to stand on your principles. At least a handful of administrators and employees on the campus truly cares about the students.
To the SU top brass, you’ll always have problems on your hands when you hire step-and-fetch-watchdog puppets like Morris.

To the anonymous comment of what kind of students are the admitting into SU these days.... whoever you should remain anonymous. That was a very ignorant statement to make. Sadly incidents like this happen everywhere on many college campuses. Whoever you are please think before you speak next time.

Why do people always like to say some dumb BS like what happen if it was your child mess? What would you had done if your son was accuse for rape??? Would you give up on him? It's like this, no one heard both sides of the story and for what I'm seeing, no one is even trying to to hear or understand Richardson side of the story. The girl might a got caught havin sex and she needed to find an excuse to get out of trouble. I mean think about it, how can you rape someone and make the girl give you oral? Why she didnt bite him when she was doing it if she didnt want to do it??? For now, i feel as though it was her fault and not his. I believe she wanted to have sex with him, lied about her age, and only yell rape because she didnt want to get in trouble. But I cant put all the blame on her because Richardson shoulda made sure that she was the right age. But lets be real, she aint all that innocent. Many rape cases, the victim had facial damages from the person beating on her or marks on her neck from the person choking her to keep her quiet. Did the "victim" had these type of conditions????? Hummmm.. Now I just gave yall something to think about. So imma ended with this, just how the criminal is innocent until proven guilty, the victim is guilty until proven innocent!!!! See, I just gave yall something else to think about.

You are innocent "regardless of what allegations are made" until you have your day in court. You have to remember that in most cases, young females will get mad with their partners (including wives against husbands and husbands against wives) for whatever reason and in a moment of rage and hurt will make known allegations that are completely "FALSE". In this case, I hope Mr. Richardson is innocent of all charge and go on with his life in pursuing a quality and productive education.
