  For some, Barack Obama's State of the Union address was the best speech ever and for others it was motivation to vote for Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich or even Ron Paul. No matter your political affiliation or favor of one candidate over another everyone is working towards a new version of themselves, new ambitions, new aspirations, and turning over a new leaf.

My colleague informed me two weeks ago about Southern University declaring financial exigency during the Dolores Spikes era and I felt it was my duty and obligation as a SU student to track down the truth.

  I know some 80s and 90s babies wonder why do they have to learn about History of Civilization, American History, or Cultural/Human Geography. These "ancient" cultures and civilizations and their practices are still present today.  We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us.

  As the American nation approaches the 10-year anniversary of 9/11, many questions continue to swirl through my mind. Will there ever be peace amongst and between all nations? Why is there poverty within every country/nation? Will there ever come a time when the whole world isn't controlled by an elite few who are significantly wealthy?  Will there ever come a time when people forget about earning a certain status on the so-called "socioeconomic ladder of success"? Can wealth and education be distributed equally among all nations; thereby, forcing the eradication of poverty, greed, and war while also leveling competition, justice and authority? All of these questions revolve around the tenants of HOPE, PEACE and LOVE and these tenants are desperately needed in this era of protests, wars, and mass violence; the Era of Revolution.

How can this be? ​SU has declared financial exigency/emergency, an issue that the SU community WAS so passionate and skeptical of. It has been reported that financial exigency draws negative attention to the university as a whole. ​I agree, because if one were to look closely at SU's current status of functioning, these several implementations (i.

Now that we are 7 days into financial exigency, we ask ourselves how did we get here? How do we get out? What does this mean for Southern University? How will this affect me as an individual student, faculty member, staff member, or employee? Throughout the next 23 days we must decide where to go from here… What steps and in what direction should we take? Desperate times don't call for desperate measures but a fresh perspective and approach.

The time has come. For the students, faculty, staff, and administration to re-evaluate the systems and processes we use at this university.  The time has come for students to give their input on making the classroom, registration, matriculation, and graduation processes better.
