i attended SU (SU Academy) starting in the fall of 04. My freshman year was the best experience of my life because I wasnt the type to go out to meet new people and try new things but SU expanded my horizon I shall say. I met new friends and made some best friends of whom i still talk to on a regular basis even tho they are on the other side of the country. My sophomore year was a total upset. Katrina, refugees, curfew, robberies.. I couldnt take it. We didnt even get the meet n greet week to prepare for classes. After Christmas, I jetted. I always wondered what my life would be like if I would have stayed, and I considered going back to become part of the alum, but then again, after reading some of this, why should I??

As a Mass communication Grad from Southern I felt I had to say something so…..I had a great time at Southern and will always love it but I do not think I will ever return. If southern taught me anything it taught me that there was more out there in the world then what Southern has to offer. I want to think Southern for making me who I am, a successful black man, I would also like to think Southern for helping me find my wife. But once my wife Graduates from Southern this Spring I will cut my ties. It’s just not the same University I entered into in 2003 when it still had a purpose, good leadership and a caring student body.

As a former Editor of Southern Digest Newspaper (2001), I am impressed and encourage to give back to our Alma Mater. I do want to point out that we should not only give back through financial resources but we also need to send young people whether they are black, mexican, asian and all the ethnicities in our neighborhood to attend Southern University and A&M College. I want to encourage the fellow Jaguars to be true to yourself and to God because this is an opportunity for us to come together in prayer for God to turn some things around in our state government. If we look at the history of Southern University, you will read that the community, pastors and clergymen prayed for God to open Southern University and A&M College AGAIN. However, God did not just open Southern University and A&M College again but was bless with the land and is the FIRST HBCU to create and expand its system in a state where it was treason to be black and educated. I said all that to say this is that Southern University needs a "gully washing" revival lead by true pastors who are truly anointed by God and not by the number of people who attend their ministries. I would publicly recommend Pastor Bates of Fellowship Tabernacle Ministries due to the fact that when I was student at SU. Pastor Bates mentored me to stand on the Word of God when that is the unpopular thing to do when everyone wanted to be Greek when I attended Southern.

One day, I look forward to coming back to Southern University and A&M College to be the keynote speaker at graduation or Founder's Week because it is in my heart to be a light to enlighten people from all walks of life. So in the midst of storm, do not stop dreaming or thinking out the box and do not throw in the towel. However, you must learn the concept of pressing to meet the mark of the higher calling which is in Jesus Christ. In putting that to practice, I was able to matriculate through Southern University pressing my way with no handouts, no good ol'boy system and no money to buy me out. Southern University stay true to yourself and most importantly stay true to God. Stay Focus and Sho'nuff Stay in the Will of God!!!

Yours Truly,
Mr. Terrance T. Tyler, MBA
